Adding A DKIM Record

A DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) record is a TXT record in your domain's DNS settings that contains a public key used to verify the authenticity of an email. It works by allowing the sending mail server to sign an email with a private key, which the receiving server can verify using the public key in the DKIM record. This ensures the email hasn't been tampered with and confirms the sender's domain.

You need a DKIM record to:

  1. Prevent spoofing: It helps prove emails are genuinely from your domain, reducing the risk of phishing attacks.
  2. Improve deliverability: Email providers like Gmail and Outlook use DKIM to trust your emails, increasing the chances they land in the inbox rather than spam.
  3. Enhance domain reputation: Consistent DKIM use signals to ISPs that your domain is legitimate, boosting your email credibility.

Without it, your emails may be flagged as suspicious or rejected by receiving servers.

To add a DKIM record to a domain hosted through WebStarts the domain must be using ns1.webstarts.com and ns2.webstarts.com as it's name servers.

  1. When logged into your account click domains from the drop down in the top right.
  2. Click the overflow menu to the right of the domain name you'd like to add the DKIM record to and select DNS Records.
  3. Click the Add Record button and select TXT as the record type.
  4. Enter the DKIM hostname from your mail provider.
  5. Enter the DKIM value from your mail provider and click save.

Your changes will take up to 48 hours to propagate but typically less.
